The West Virginia senator indicated, however, that he would be willing to have a discussion about the future of the Senate filibuster if the GOP voted down a bill that had bipartisan approval and amendments....

Manchin, a moderate Democrat who has faced heavy criticism for his opposition to filibuster reform and certain progressive policies and legislation, made the remarks Thursday evening during an interview with CNN’s Manu Raju. After Ranju asked Manchin if there was any evidence that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wants to “work” with him in light of the bipartisan commission to investigate the Capitol riot being blocked by Republicans, the senator insisted that the proposal was not really “dead” while extolling the virtues of bipartisanship....

Leaders in the city of Bluefield are considering writing to Manchin and Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) in support of the $350 billion the stimulus bill will set aside to help states and municipal governments. Manchin, who is considered a conservative Democrat, is also facing pressure from his own party to back Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus plan. He has previously said he would only vote for the package if it has bipartisan support....

Manchin now enjoys 42 percent approval in West Virginia, compared with 37 percent of respondents who disapprove. This is a notable change compared with results in the same poll in October, 2020. The poll comes as Democrats in the House and Senate are pushing ahead with President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion infrastructure proposal, though Manchin has indicated he will not support that amount of spending. The last WV MetroNews West Virginia Poll in October showed the Democratic senator with 44 percent approval from likely voters and 44 percent disapproval, meaning both his approval and disapproval have declined....

The Build Back Better bill, which passed the House of Representatives in November, offered sweeping funding to social and climate programs. Democratic leaders sought to get Manchin, a moderate Democrat representing West Virginia, to support the bill. But on Sunday, he announced he would not vote in its support while appearing on Fox News Sunday. “If I can’t go home and explain it to the people of West Virginia, I can’t vote for it....

During an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, Manchin spoke about his future saying, “I haven’t made a decision what I am going to do in 2024. I’ve got two years ahead of me now to do the best I can for the state and for my country.” He added: “Everything is on the table. The only thing I can tell you is what I will do is whatever I can, when I make my decision what I think is the best that I can support and represent the people of West Virginia, but also be true to this country and the Constitution of this country....
