But economists outside the White House, and many Americans, aren’t so sure. The debate around a potential recession reflects widespread concern about the state of the economy, underscoring Biden’s struggle to convince most Americans that they’re better off financially under him than his predecessor — a long standing litmus test that could spell doom for Democrats in the midterm elections this fall, and for Biden should he choose to run again in 2024....

The Morning Consult polling data, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percent, showed Biden beating Trump 47 percent to 42 percent, while Sanders beat the president 46 percent to 42 percent. But both matchups showed that a sizable portion of voters remained uncommitted, with 11 percent and 12 percent of respondents saying they were undecided for each respective candidate. In a hypothetical head-to-head match-up against the commander-in-chief just one month before Iowa caucuses, Biden polled at 46 percent of the vote, putting him six points ahead of Trump, according to Morning Consult’s latest 2020 poll. By comparison, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg polled two points ahead of Trump, winning 44 percent and 43 percent support among surveyed voters respectively. Experts who spoke to Newsweek suggested that Biden was making the right moves in terms of working closely with U.S. allies on the issue, but also argued that Republican criticism would be unavoidable, while the effect former President Donald Trump had on U.S. foreign relations could also stymie Biden’s efforts. Putin signed decrees on Monday recognizing the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Luhansk and People’s Republic of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine—the move was later approved by the Russian Duma....

The trip comes as Biden hopes to find a diplomatic path with Saudi Arabia after years of taking a hardline stance against the country over the death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. However, the president also said “time is of the essence,” and that he would rather pass a large stimulus bill than “cherry-pick” individual proposals because he sees all the items in his proposal as supporting one another and integral to helping the country....

On the election trail, Biden pledged to pass legislation eliminating the federal death penalty and to “incentivize states to follow” by abolishing their own. The letter, signed by the American Civil Liberties Union, Human Rights Watch, and the NAACP, argues that the death penalty is disproportionately applied to African-American prisoners and those with severe mental illnesses. Referring to capital punishment as “cruel and unusual,” the letter adds that it “fails to comport with either the 8th or 14th Amendments and violates our obligations under international law....

In a clip from a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in September 1998, unearthed by The Intercept, the former vice president said he believed there was “no reasonable prospect” of weapons inspectors obtaining a “guarantee” that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction while Hussein was “at the helm” of the country. The then-senator of Delaware went on to suggest Hussein could only be removed by men in uniform “back on foot, in the desert taking the son of a—taking Saddam down,” four years before Biden voted in favor of the Iraq War....

Steyer confronted Biden during a discussion on race. Steyer alleged that South Carolina state Senator Dick Harpootlian, who supports the Biden campaign, made racist comments about a person associated with Steyer’s campaign. The state’s Legislative Black Caucus condemned Harpootlian’s remarks and asked to Biden to disavow them earlier in the week. “Joe, I’m asking you to come with me and the Legislative Black Caucus and disavow Dick Harpootlian and what he had to say, it was wrong,” said Steyer....

The Quinnipiac University poll published on Wednesday shows that Biden now enjoys 40 percent approval among Americans and that his disapproval rating now stands at 52 percent. While that’s still a net negative, the figures represent a significant improvement over the past six weeks. On July 20, the same poll found that Biden’s approval rating was just 31 percent, while 60 percent disapproved of the job he was doing....

During a panel discussion on CNN, David Axelrod, who was former President Barack Obama’s chief strategist during his campaign, commented that he thought Biden still “has a play here,” despite failing to impress in any of the Democratic debates thus far. “Biden, I wouldn’t say he was a house of fire in any of the debates that we’ve been to. “Michigan is obviously a very important state today,” Sanders said to reporters on Tuesday. “There’s a lot of delegates up there and we certainly very much want to win this debate. But I think let’s not say what you have to win.” Sanders focused his campaign on Michigan in the days leading up to the primary, even canceling a planned rally in Mississippi to begin a focused attempt at drumming up support....

President Donald Trump has played on this to draw support from Second Amendment advocates, claiming that a Biden victory in Tuesday’s election would signal the start of a new government offensive against gun owners....

The Change.org petition, first reported by Fox 10 Phoenix, urges the Democratic presidential candidate to support monthly payments of $2,000 for everyone in the United States while the pandemic continues. The petition has also asked the Democratic National Committee to endorse the policy until Americans are able to return to work. “The future of our economy is uncertain and the recovery from the Corona Virus Epidemic will be difficult,” the petition reads....
