That’s the headline on a full-page advertisement taken out in Thursday’s Washington Post highlighting the case of Jonathan Wall, a 26-year-old who has been languishing in a federal supermax detention facility in Baltimore, Maryland, for more than a year as he awaits trial on federal marijuana conspiracy charges. Wall’s family and supporters took out the ad to call on the Biden administration to make good on campaign pledges to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level—and save people like Wall from serving lengthy sentences while others make a fortune working in the legal cannabis industry....

The University of North Florida released the polling data on Monday morning. Joseph Maldonado-Passage, who is more commonly known as Joe Exotic, has filed a motion in a federal court not to delay his resentencing for treatment. He announced that he had prostate cancer in November and was subsequently transferred to a federal medical center in Butner, North Carolina. He was originally held at a federal medical facility in Fort Worth, Texas. It is unclear where his resentencing will take place....

During a speech in California on Friday, the president said that coal plants cost too much money and that his administration will “be shutting these plants down all across America” and have “wind and solar” energy instead. “No one is building new coal plants because they can’t rely on it, even if they have all the coal guaranteed for the rest of their existence of the plant,” the president added....

“I didn’t do anything intentionally whatsoever,” Manchin said during a Sunday appearance on ABC News’ This Week. “I did everything I could to bring us together so we’d have more support, and the public would get the needed help, as needed,” he added. “I always try to work with my Democrat colleagues, my caucus, and my Republican friends.” Manchin slowed down Senate negotiations on Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus bill as he considered two separate proposals for enhanced unemployment benefits for 10 hours Friday evening....

Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer rolled out the $3.5 trillion proposal in mid-July. The bill is part of the White House’s two-track strategy, with a smaller roughly $1 trillion bipartisan traditional infrastructure bill moving forward in the Senate. Republican lawmakers balked at the “care economy” proposals Biden wanted to include, leading Democrats to put forward a separate and larger budget reconciliation package in hopes of passing it without any GOP support....

Manchin, one of the more moderate Democrats in Congress, is still a key holdout for the Biden administration priority after months of negotiations. With unanimous GOP opposition expected, Democrats would not be able to lose even one vote in the 50-50 Senate to pass the measure. The House has already passed a version of the package. Manchin initially voiced his opposition on December 19 because of concerns over the measure’s potential effect on inflation and federal deficits....

Manchin’s quarterly filing with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for the period from April 1 to June 30 shows that the senator received net contributions of more than $1.4 million—a significant increase on his fundraising in the previous quarter. That filing period coincides with public debate about the For the People Act, when Manchin, a moderate Democrat, played a major role in the evenly divided Senate. FEC filings show that Manchin raised $1,475,062 in net contributions between April 1 and June 30....
