The president’s approval rating has been underwater since late August as the final U.S. forces withdrew from Afghanistan amid widespread criticism of his handling of the troop drawdown. Since then, the administration has suffered mixed fortunes, passing a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill but so far failing to pass the separate $1.75 trillion Build Back Better Act. A Fox Business poll conducted from December 11 to 14 showed Biden’s standing with voters had improved and his approval stood at 47 percent....

Biden spoke to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday, and the host asked him if Putin had an offramp from the conflict that began on February 24, in what Russia dubbed a “special military operation.” The U.S. and its Western allies have imposed harsh sanctions on Russia and provided Ukraine with support including military equipment as the country battles Putin’s forces. Tapper asked Biden if there was a way for Putin to leave Ukraine without seizing territory in a way that would be acceptable in the Russian president’s mind....

The poll presented several questions on the Biden administration’s actions regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, inflation, COVID and other political questions. The poll of 1,023 registered voters was conducted over the weekend and had a “credibility interval,” similar to a margin of error, of 3 percent, meaning Biden is anywhere from even to behind Trump by up to 6 percent within this sample of Americans. Support for Biden or Trump in a potential 2024 race has been close across recent polls, with significant partisan divides consistently present, along with differences dovetailing with COVID vaccination status and education level....

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, 6.4 million American households were behind on rent by the end of March. As of July 5, the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey reported roughly 3.6 million people in the U.S. were facing eviction within the next two months. Biden called on “Congress to extend the eviction moratorium to protect such vulnerable renters and their families without delay.” The Supreme Court ruled against allowing further extensions of the moratorium, which the Biden administration cited as its reason for being unable to extend it without Congress’ approval....

Child tax credits, which formed part of the America Rescue Plan passed in March to help families through the pandemic, would be extended through the Democrats’ proposal. But moderate Democrat Manchin wants it capped by household income. Manchin told the White House that tax credit must include a work requirement and family income cap at about $60,000 a year, according to an Axios report citing sources familiar with the negotiations....
