News of Clayton’s death was shared on social media by many of his former ESPN colleagues. Per Chris Mortensen, Clayton died in a Seattle-area hospital after “a brief illness.” Clayton’s wife, Pat, and sister, Amy, were at his side. Nicknamed “The Professor,” Clayton began his reporting career in 1972 working at Steelers training camp, covering the team with twice-weekly dispatches for the St. Marys (Pa.) Daily Press.
