During what is thought to be the panel’s final presentation, footage was shown of the congressional leaders attempting to make arrangements for the Capitol to be cleared from the mob of Donald Trump supporters from a secure location on January 6.
The video showed the extent to which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer were putting out calls for help as the rioting was taking place to protect lawmakers and then continue to count the electoral votes to certify the election in favor of Joe Biden.
During the seven-minute clip, Schumer can be seen calling then-acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen and asking him: “Why don’t you get the president to tell them to leave the Capitol, Mr. Attorney General, in your law enforcement responsibility? A public statement that they should all leave.”
In another section, Schumer, Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Scalise, are seen huddled round a phone while they ask defense officials about their plans to clear the Capitol.
The unnamed official on the other end of the phone tells lawmakers that he cannot speak for the leadership that’s going to be “responsible for executing the operation.”
In response, Pelosi said: “Well, just pretend for a moment that it was the Pentagon or the White House or some other entity that was under siege. And let me say, you can logistically get people there as you make the plan.”
McCarthy can also been seen as part of the group listening in on the call in an alternative angle of the lawmakers gathering round the phone.
The two Republicans have now been widely condemned on social media for their words and rhetoric in the 21 months since the insurrection, which include criticizing Pelosi for failing to sufficiently make plans to protect the Capitol that day, downplaying the violence and attacking the work of the January 6 panel.
MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan tweeted: “Almost the entire GOP tried to gaslight America into pretending 1/6 wasn’t a big deal, wasn’t a horror show, even though we saw it then with our own eyes and we see this new footage today again with our own eyes. McCarthy, Scalise, they all knew, they all knew, they were there…”
JM Rieger, a senior video editor for The Washington Post, tweeted footage of Scalise speaking at a press conference on June 9, also attended by McCarthy, where the Louisiana congressman suggested Pelosi may have delayed sending in the National Guard.
Rieger edited the clip to then show the footage played by the panel on Thursday of Scalise with Pelosi as she took steps to evacuate the Capitol.
Responding to Rieger’s video, former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party David Pepper wrote: “Scalise is such a snake. She’s fighting to make everyone safe. They cower. Then they attack her later. Stomach-churning sleaze.”
Writer Wajahat Ali tweeted: “Spineless cowards Mitch McConnell & Steven Scalise huddling there with Pelosi and Schumer and trying to get law enforcement to protect them and their colleagues.
“Now? Kissing up to Trump, MAGA and violent insurrectionists. McConnell’s only litmus is winning after all.”
Also on Thursday, the panel played footage showing former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney testifying that McCarthy had pleaded with Trump to call off the riot, but the former president appeared to approve of what was taking place.
Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler previously said when McCarthy urged Trump to call off the attack on January 6, the president responded: “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.”
On Thursday a video of Mulvaney was played in which the former White House staffer corroborated the claim.
“I had a conversation at some point in the day or week after the riot with Kevin McCarthy,” Mulvaney said. “It was very similar to what Jamie had, the conversation she had retold.”
In a speech on the House floor a week after the Capitol attack, McCarthy, who refused to comply with a subpoena issued by the committee, said that Trump “bears responsibility” for the Capitol riot and that the former president should have “immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.”
At the end of Thursday’s hearing, the January 6 committee voted unanimously to subpoena Trump to testify about his version of events surrounding the Capitol riot.
McCarthy and Scalise have been contacted for comment.
