Upstart, trained by Richard Violette, is next on The Wynn’s oddsboard at 9-to-2.
Morning-line odds will be posted at Churchill Downs upon Wednesday’s post position draw. For now, wagering is open in Vegas.
While the sport of horse racing has been waiting for its first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed completed the Kentucky Derby/Preakness/Belmont sweep in 1978, superlatives are being showered upon American Pharoah, whose odds are 10-to-1 to win all three races (The Wynn is offering 7-to-1 odds any horse winning the 2015 Triple Crown).
Private clocker and bloodstock agent Gary Young, per the Louisville Courier-Journal , said that American Pharoah may be the best horse he’s seen in the 35 years he’s been in the business.
“He’s simply like Michael Jordan and stays in the air like he did in his rookie year,” Young said. “He stays in the air longer than any horse and you get the feeling that there’s not one gear left, but he may have two, three or four gears."
Baffert, of course, is tempering his excitement.
“He surprises me every time I run him,” Baffert said Sunday. “Looking forward, I’m just hoping everything goes well. But he still needs racing luck – get a decent post, need to break well and get the trip. A lot can happen, so I don’t really take anything for granted.”
Here’s a look at Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown odds at The Wynn.
