Boston is the most likely destination for Kemba Walker, according to a report from the Dallas Morning News, which cites an unidentified league source. The Hornets are also in contention to retain him, while the Lakers and Mavericks are still in the mix, as well.
The Celtics will need to retool their roster this summer as Kyrie Irving and Al Horford are expected to leave and sign elsewhere. Boston president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said earlier this week the team was “exploring different opportunities” in free agency and on the trade market.
“We have some flexibility, but I don’t really know what is realistic yet,” Ainge said, via NBC Sports Boston. “That’s what we’ll spend the rest of this week trying to figure out, is what even do we have a chance to do and where should be our priorities?
“But I’m excited about the opportunity. I’m excited about the flexibility that we have. I’m excited about the youth that we have and some of our returning players. I think it’s going to be a really fun year. Looking forward to it.”
Walker, meanwhile, has spent his entire eight-year career with Charlotte. The three-time All-Star became eligible for a “supermax” contract when he was named to the All-NBA third team after 2018-19.
“Charlotte’s definitely my first priority,” Walker told The Athletic in early June. “That’s where I’ve been for eight years and that’s all I know. Not many people get a chance to play for one NBA team throughout their career. … Charlotte is my home, man. I’ve been there for eight years and it’s been the most amazing eight years of my life. My family, they love it. The fans love me. The organization has been great and gave me my opportunity.”
Walker averaged 25.6 points and 5.9 assists while shooting 35.6 percent from 3-point range last season.
