“Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!” Trump tweeted on Friday morning. The president’s tweet came days after called Cummings a “bully” and said Baltimore was a “rat and rodent infested mess.”
Several hours later, Haley, who left her position as Trump’s ambassador in October 2018, replied, “This is so unnecessary,” along with a rolling eyes emoji.
Conway in the early afternoon quote tweeted Haley and remarked, “THIS is so unnecessary Trump-PENCE2020.”
Journalist Yashar Ali noted that Conway’s post was “the First reaction to Haley’s tweet from the White House.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Newsweek on Friday afternoon.
Haley, a former South Carolina governor who served Trump for the first two years of the administration, was praised by the president as “a fantastic person” when she announced she would resign as ambassador.
Conway’s in her reply to Haley mentioned Vice President Mike Pence’s name in all capital letters, seeming to signal his importance in the 2020 ticket amid rumors of the vice president’s future with the administration.
Cummings on Friday confirmed reports that an individual had tried to enter his home and that he was notified by his home security system and scared the person away by yelling.
Haley on Tuesday commented on Trump’s criticisms of Baltimore but did not rebuke him.
“Instead of all of this back and forth about who everyone thinks is racist and whose not, the President just offered to help the people of Baltimore,” Haley tweeted. “They should take him up on it. Let’s put the same energy into where it will make a difference.”
Friday on Fox News, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley brushed off people who criticized Trump for what he has said about Cummings and Baltimore.
“For so long, people of Baltimore and around the region have said, ‘I wish someone would draw attention to the poverty, to the crime, the infestation of rodents in that town,’” Gidley said. “And finally this president does, and they’re saying, ‘No, that’s not right.’”
But Kellyanne Conway’s husband George Conway, a conservative lawyer who criticizes Trump daily, had a different opinion than his wife.
“Come on out, Nikki, the water’s warm,” George Conway tweeted before his wife’s reply to Haley. “Be on the right side of history. Be on the right side.”
