The 32-year-old player has shed 25 pounds the past two years due to intense cycling and says he’s in good enough shape to get back into the league.
“My body feels good enough to come back and play at a high level, even better I think because I’m just a little wiser,” Winslow told Fox Sports. “It was good to get away from the game just to work on me.
“I want to be a better player than I was before. I think I can.”
In a way, the former Pro Bowler has already made a couple of comebacks. He broke his leg during his rookie season in 2004 and was in a horrific motorcycle accident in 2005 that cost him the entire season.
“I remember (doctors) talking about amputating my leg,” Winslow said. “They said I was never going to play again. That really touched me. I remember that like it was yesterday.
“To make a long story short, I decided that, nah, that’s not how it’s going to be.”
Ten years after making an impressive comeback in 2006 (when he led all tight ends in catches), he is looking to prove he still has what it takes to make it in the NFL.
He said he is talking to former coaches who are now with the Falcons, the Texans and the Packers with hopes of being given a chance.
Over the course of his 10-year career, Winslow had 469 receptions, 5,236 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns in 105 games.
