Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee’s mother, spoke of the initiative with Fox News Digital on Sunday night, saying that her family “would like to fundraise in hopes to offer a reward, and possibly hire a private investigator if that becomes necessary.”
Funds for the family will be raised through two online fundraisers—a GoFundMe set up by Kaylee Goncalves’ former boss Jeremiah Shea and a GiveSendGo campaign by family friend Brooke Miller—according to Kristi Goncalves.
“The money raised will go directly to getting us answers as well as helping to pay for Kaylee’s final arrangements and her celebration of life on Dec. 30,” she told Fox News.
The investigation into the murder of the four students—Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen—has now entered its fourth week without Moscow police naming any suspects.
Since the discovery of the students police have consistently said they believe the murders to be a targeted attack but have yet to provide any information supporting the claim. As weeks have passed with no significant lead in the investigation, speculation and rumors have been spreading online, with internet sleuths trying their hand at cracking the case.
According to Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt, all four students were stabbed while they were asleep. Three of the victims—Kernodle, Goncalves and Mogen—lived together in the house where they were attacked, while Chapin was visiting his girlfriend Kernodle.
Moscow police have announced that they were looking to talk to the occupants of a 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra without a license plate that was spotted in the immediate area of the King Street residence in the early hours of November 13. The lead was obtained after hundreds of tips were passed on to police.
On Saturday, police informed the Moscow community that detectives and others investigators from the Moscow Police Department, the FBI and Idaho State Police would be in the area to help in the ongoing investigation.
On the same day, the four victims were honored with a moment of silence during a somber commencement ceremony at the at the ICCU Arena in Moscow, where Kaylee Goncalves should have been taking the stage to receive her diploma.
