Some big names in music that have come out a winner or runner up on the show include Carrie Underwood, Fantasia Barrino, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Adam Lambert, and David Cook.

For the fifth time, Perry, Bryan, and Lionel Richie are back to judge the 20th season of the singing competition. As the audition episodes move forward, more hopefuls will get that golden ticket to Hollywood and be one step closer to be named the next American Idol.

The reality show has been live on the air for decades with longtime host Ryan Seacrest manning the helm. The original three judges were Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson but Perry, Bryan, and Ritchie give the originals a run for their money.

According to Deadline, more than 8 million people tuned in to watch the premiere of the new season on ABC back in late February. During one of the new auditions, Bryan admitted that he didn’t know he had dimples to which Perry exclaimed, “Those are fat rolls!”

In her tweet, Perry likely didn’t mean any harm with her comment and hoped that the Luke Bryan “stans” didn’t come for her later. “I say this with all the love,” the pop singer wrote using a heart emoji.

Bryan admitted that he contracted COVID-19 in 2021 and that he wouldn’t be a part of any Idol live shows until he made a full recovery.

“Certainly the key to feeling better for having COVID was, you know, I was very fortunate to not have a long, long set of symptoms and stuff. … It was still quite challenging for a couple of days, but thank God for just, certainly, health,” he wrote in a tweet at the time.

Throughout the audition process, contestants discuss where they came from and how they ended up in front of three judges. One of the many contestants this season was 15-year-old Grace Franklin, who is Aretha Franklin’s granddaughter. Unfortunately, she did not make it to Hollywood which caused Perry to walk off since she was the only “yes” of the three.

Another Hollywood hopeful sang a cover of Perry’s hit song “Wide Awake.” the single now has more than 979 million views on YouTube. Lady K blew the judges away with her one-of-a-kind rendition that gained her access to Hollywood.
