“Nepo baby” is a term used as an insult by many online when they deem someone to have achieved success only as a result of receiving help from famous or successful family members.
The younger Moss sister, who has carved out a career for herself as an OnlyFans model, added her voice to the conversation about relatives of famous people getting a leg up in numerous industries, particularly in entertainment.
“I’m so sick of people blaming nepotism for why they aren’t rich and famous or successful,” she wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “Obviously its not fair that people who come from famous families are getting a leg up because of that.”
“But guess what? Life isn’t fair,” she continued, adding that “if you put your mind to something you can accomplish anything! So instead of being negative about other peoples success go and try and create your own!”
“She then shared a TikTok post, which showed an edited image of her floating out to sea in a boat, alongside the caption: “My last name suddenly disappearing when people are talking about nepotism.”
In an apparent effort to taunt her critics, British-born model Lottie Moss, 24, added: “Oooh y’all mad cos I was born huh.”
Among the sea of Twitter users who responded to her posts, one wrote: “I can see why you’d think that nepotism isn’t a massive advantage given that Kate Moss is your sister and yet you haven’t managed to do anything with that.”
“Did I ever say that nepotism isn’t a massive advantage?” Lottie Moss responded. “Obviously it is but if you don’t have that advantage it’s not okay to abuse people on social media that do.”
Elsewhere in her string on tweets on the subject, Lottie Moss acknowledged her own privilege, writing: “I obviously am so grateful that I have had the opportunities I’ve had don’t get it twisted.”
“Obviously I’m privileged being related to a huge model also,” she went on. “And am privileged for numerous other reasons and as I say I am grateful for it all but s******* on others because of it makes NO sense.”
“I loveeee that people get so pressed about something that I tweet GET A LIFE,” she added, as the criticism continued to pile in.
Nepo babies have become a talking point on social media, Twitter especially, after Vulture and New York Magazine articles highlighted a number of entertainers today with influential parents who may have helped their career. The list included Lily-Rose Depp, Zoë Kravitz, Tracee Ellis Ross and Jack Quaid, to name just a few.
Lottie Moss began her modeling career at 16 years old, when she appeared in the April 2014 issue of Teen Vogue. At the age of 18, she appeared on the cover of Vogue France alongside fellow model Lucky Blue Smith.
In a mid-December Instagram post, Lottie Moss reflected on her career over the past year, as she revealed mental health struggles and acknowledged her “very privileged position.”
“This year has been a crazy one for me,” she wrote. “I started out being in the worst place of my life and ended up in the best place I’ve ever been mentally.
“I know it’s hard for people to understand but being In a toxic industry at a very young age really took its toll on me, being judged in the newspaper constantly and having my every move watched since I was 16 has been very difficult for my mental health.
“I understand I have come from a very privileged position being the sister of someone very famous but believe it or not that person never really supported me,” she went on. “My parents were amazing but could not relate to what I was going through and did not know the full extent of what I was going through most of the time, I was pretty much on my own so I had to navigate this by myself and do the best I could which I feel I have.
“Fashion modelling was not for me and had its ups and downs but I do feel it allowed me to meet some amazing people and took me to some amazing places! I have never been very good and saying how I feel and I hope this isn’t coming off as ‘poor me’ just remember in this world everything is relative and to remember everyone has been through their own traumas and experiences that they chose to deal with in their own way so please be kind.”
Kate Moss, who has the same father but different mother to Lottie Moss, had already achieved international fame by the time that her half-sister was born in 1998.
