The Associated Press called the race on Monday after Hobbs was given a lead that the AP did not believe she would give up.
After 98 percent of votes had been counted Hobbs held a lead of 50.4 percent to Lake’s 49.6 percent.
Supporters of Hobbs and Lake’s critics have relished in her defeat and joked about the result.
Author Majid Padellan shared an image of Liz Cheney’s face imposed on Game Of Thrones character Lady Olenna with the caption: “Tell Kari Lake. I want her to know it was me.”
This was in reference to a moment in the show where Lady Olenna reveals she had successfully tricked antagonist Cersei Lannister.
In reference to the election, Cheney had publicly denounced Lake for the position of governor and had even released a commercial attacking the candidate.
Liz Cheney also added to the mockery by sharing a letter on Monday Lake had addressed to her following the commercial.
In the letter, dated October 28, Lake thanked Cheney for her commercial and said it was resulting in an overall boost to the campaign with more people supporting the Republican candidate.
She added that the commercial would have the opposite intended effect and would instead “add another 10 points to [her] lead”.
Sharing the letter, Cheney simply captioned it, “You’re welcome” while tagging Lake.
Attorney Renato Mariotti also weighed in on the victory of Hobbs and shared a clip of Lake before the election where she proclaimed she would be governor for two terms.
“It turns out that Kari Lake was her campaign’s own worst nightmare,” he wrote as a caption.
Martin Weiss, the former ambassador of Austria to the United States also shared an image of Lake from this clip, this time focussing on her claim she was going to reform the media.
“Kari Lake to journalists: ‘I’m gonna be your worst frikin’ nightmare … we’re gonna make you into journalists again.
“Voters to Kari Lake: ‘Go back to being a journalist
“Journalists to Kari Lake: ‘Welcome back, Kari’”
Journalist Otto English also mocked Lake by sharing comments she made on Twitter ahead of, during, and after the election was concluded.
“Kari Lake, a masterclass in MAGA over confidence, denial of reality and how to be a really bad loser.”
Lake’s critics also began to mock her following one of her latest tweets after the race was called. Lake tweeted: “Arizonans know BS when they see it.”
Independent political commentator Brian Normoyle replied: “They certainly do. That’s why you didn’t earn enough votes to win.”
Podcast host Blake Allen Murphy also joked: “It’s kinda ironic cause as a child my family and me grew up watching John Hook and Kari Lake and tonight Kari Lake got the hook.”
Lake, the latest Trump-endorsed midterm candidate to go on to lose their race, has frequently cast doubt on the integrity of Arizona’s election system.
These comments were further amplified when the Maricopa County Elections Department announced that many tabulation machines in the county weren’t working correctly last week.
