The Basketball Hall of Famer spent his 68th birthday Thursday undergoing quadruple heart bypass surgery at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and is expected to make a full recovery.

Abdul-Jabbar was admitted to the hospital last week with cardiovascular disease, the UCLA Medical Center confirmed. 

After an All-American career at UCLA, he was drafted by the Bucks in 1969 and then traded to the Lakers in 1975, where he remained until 1989. Abdul-Jabbar won six MVP awards and six NBA Championships and, at the time of his retirement, was the NBA’s all-time leader in points scored (38,387), field goals made (15,837) and blocked shots (3,189).
