West tweeted that he’s sure that his mother and the new Democratic vice presidential candidate would surely be friends had they met.
“I know my mom and Kamala Harris would have been friends,” he wrote. “[C]ongratulations on being the democratic Vice President nominee.”
The 808s and Heartbreak rapper spoke about his excitement to campaign against Harris, as she joins former Vice President Joe Biden as his running mate in the upcoming election. “All love and respect from the future president,” he wrote.
Some people praised West for his cordiality towards an opposing candidate. Others criticized the rapper for the tweet, saying he was only seeking attention or wasn’t really running.
West’s tweet praising Harris came after the rapper delivered a nominating petition to Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate’s office. “We will review the petitions to ensure they meet the minimum requirements,” Pate tweeted, along with a picture of West’s affidavit for candidacy. He said the review process will likely be completed Monday.
The review will take a look at signatures that West has obtained to get him on the ballot.
Even though West says he’s “honored” to run against Harris, his campaign has hit a few rough patches in trying to get on different states’ ballots. As previously reported, Democrats in Wisconsin filed a complaint against the West campaign, saying that it had accrued false signatures in hopes of landing on the ballot. Some signatures were listed as “Mickey Mouse” and “Bernie Sanders.”
In the rapper’s home state Illinois, nearly 2,000 of the 3,218 signatures that West’s campaign submitted to the state election board were found to have issues and be invalid. The state requires 2,500 signatures to get on the ballot.
Signatures weren’t the only issue that West has faced in his run for the White House. In Ohio, West listed 18 people who said they would elect him in the state’s Electoral College in November, but six are listed as living at the same address in Cleveland, and four are listed as living at the same address in a Cleveland suburb.
West’s publicist did not respond to Newsweek’s emailed request for comment in time for publication. Newsweek also reached out to press contacts for Harris and Biden.
