“We have high standards for the players in our program,” coach Bruce Weber said in a statement released by the university. “Unfortunately, Malek could not live up to those expectations. We wish him the best as he continues his basketball career.”
Upon hearing the news, Wesley Iwundu, the only Wildcats player from the 2013 freshman class still with the team, posted to his Twitter: “Yea it’s over … I’m gone.” Iwundu later deleted his tweet and told the Capital-Journal in a text that he was planning to stay with the team.
Aside from Harris, leading scorer Marcus Foster (12.5 ppg) and Tre Harris also have been dismissed from the team. Three other players are transferring from the school, including sophomore guard Jevon Thomas, who led the team in assists (3.3 per game).
