Johnson, the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2013, started all 24 games for the Jayhawks during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He finished second on the team in tackles last season.
After playing for a pair of 3-9 KU teams, Johnson now gets to test his skills with the Gamecocks in the SEC. The transfer also brings Johnson, a native of Cary, N.C., closer to home.
He began his college football career at Western Carolina in 2011, before being granted a medical redshirt after a serious knee injury. He later transferred to Iowa Western Community College, where he played one season before moving to Kansas.
