Ginsburg underwent the procedure on Wednesday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. The procedure was to revise a bile duct stent that she received from Sloan Kettering in August 2019.

Ginsburg’s doctors reportedly said that stent revisions are common occurrences. Ginsburg’s recent procedure at Sloan Kettering used endoscopy and medical imaging guidance to minimize the risk of future infection.

“The Justice is resting comfortably and expects to be released from the hospital by the end of the week,” the statement concluded.

The bile duct referenced in the statement was placed when Ginsburg completed a three-week radiation treatment to treat a localized cancerous tumor on her pancreas.

Ginsburg had surgery for colon cancer in 1999, had another bout with pancreatic cancer in 2009, and had cancerous nodules removed from her lungs after breaking her three ribs after a fall in her office in November 2018. Doctors have found no evidence of cancer elsewhere in her body since then.

In November 2019, she was briefly hospitalized for a fever and chills for a “possible infection” and was also hospitalized on July 14, 20202, for another possible infection with the same symptoms.

At age 87, Ginsburg is also the oldest justice currently on the bench. Breyer is the second oldest at age 81, followed by Clarence Thomas at age 72 and Samuel Alito at age 70.

She is also considered one of four liberal Justices currently seated among the nine Justices on the nation’s highest court. Aside from the court’s five conservative judges, the liberal judges include Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Ginsburg.

Anticipating her retirement, President Donald Trump promised to release a shortlist of potential U.S. Supreme Court nominees by September 1, about two months before the national elections.

Trump anticipates a vacancy could open up on the bench within the next four years, and the opportunity to install a justice on the court could help rally support among voters hopeful for a more conservative majority on the constitutional court.

“Based on decisions being rendered now, this list is more important than ever before (Second Amendment, Right to Life, Religious Liberty, etc.) – VOTE 2020!” Trump wrote in a June 18 tweet.
