By watching the Braves over the last five games, you wouldn’t have figured the club owns the second-worst record in all of baseball, but the team’s hot week culminated Sunday with a dominating pitching performance from ace Julio Teheran.

Looking to complete a three-game sweep against the Mets at Citi Field and win their fifth consecutive game, the Braves watched in awe as Teheran fired a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks against the defending NL champions. His only flaw came on a third-inning single by Michael Conforto.

With the performance, Teheran became the first Braves pitcher to toss a one-hit shutout on the road since 1994. The win marked the seventh victory for the Braves (23-46) over their past 11 games.

Not every Braves player was happy with the win however. Leadoff hitter Mallex Smith was diagnosed with a fractured left thumb after being hit by a Jacob deGrom pitch in the seventh inning. The injury will likely force the speedster to the 15-day disabled list.

Player of the day

Michael A. Taylor, Nationals — The young outfielder filled up the stat sheet going a perfect 4-for-4 with two solo homers and a stolen base.

Highlight

It took 13 innings, but the Royals were able to win their third consecutive game against the Tigers thanks to a bases-loaded, walk-off RBI single from Cheslor Cuthbert.

Three things to know

— The Rangers swept the Cardinals in part due to Mitch Moreland’s fourth-inning home run that was calculated at 450 feet, the longest home run at Busch Stadium this season.

— With a 5-1 series-sweeping win over Tampa Bay, the Giants moved to 27-8 over their past 35 games; good for the best 35-game stretch since 1954 (won the World Series).

— Touted Cubs prospect Willson Contreras hit a two-run home run on the first Major League pitch he saw. The two-run homer was part of the Cubs offensive onslaught used to sweep the Pirates with a 10-5 victory.

What’s next

Rays (31-36) at Indians (38-30), 7:10 p.m. ET — Looking for their fourth consecutive win after sweeping the White Sox, the AL Central-leading Indians continue their homestand with a three-game set against Tampa Bay. The Tribe will send Josh Tomlin (8-1, 3.27 ERA) to the mound while the Rays will counter with southpaw Drew Smyly (2-7, 4.75 ERA).

Cardinals (35-33) at Cubs (47-20), 8:05 p.m. ET — After getting swept by the Rangers, the Cardinals need a solid series against the Cubs to narrow their double-digit deficit behind Chicago in the NL Central. The Red Birds send Jaime Garcia (4-6, 3.93 ERA) to the rubber against former St. Louis pitcher John Lackey (7-2, 2.66 ERA).
