The diminutive Pierre, who played 14 seasons in the majors, led the league in hits twice and stolen bases three times and is currently ranked 18th all-time with 614 steals. He was caught stealing 203 times, the sixth-most in history.
Pierre was a major contributor to the Marlins’ 2003 World Series championship against the heavily favored Yankees, batting .333 in six games. He helped pave the road to Miami’s 4-2 World Series win with an MLB-best 65 stolen bases during the season.
In November 2012, Pierre returned to the Marlins on a one-year, $1.6 million deal. He hit a career-low .247, though, and went unsigned when he returned to the free-agent market after the season. Pierre previously had stints with the Rockies, Cubs, Dodgers, White Sox and Phillies, earning nearly $60 million.
Pierre, 37, finished his career with a .295 batting average and 18 home runs. He also registered almost as many walks (464) as strikeouts (479).
