Here’s how these two, as well as the rest of the injuries across the NFL could impact the upcoming games this week.
Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills
Bills quarterback Josh Allen was replaced by Matt Barkley after suffering a late-game helmet to helmet hit from New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones. While attempting to rush for the first down, Allen was tied up by Patriots safety, Duron Harmon, when Jones rushed in and hit Allen in the head. It appeared that Allen was knocked out from the hit, but eventually, he was able to run off the field to the sidelines. Allen was later placed into concussion protocol by the Bills’ medical staff.
“There’s no room in football for that,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said after the game, according to ESPN. “It’s a shame to see a player like Josh, or any player, to go down from a hit like that.”
Despite having four turnovers, Allen was 13 for 39 on passes with 153 yards. After coming in as a replacement, Barkley made two quick completions but could not convert for the touchdown and finished the game 9 for 16 with 127 passing yards, including one turnover. It is currently unclear if Allen will be able to make a return for the Bills’ week five game against the Tennessee Titans, but for now Bills fans will have to back their California native backup, Matt Barkley.
Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Chicago Bears
After being strip-sacked by Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter, Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky ran to the injury tent for an apparent arm injury. Trubisky then left the game and was later ruled out by the Bears’ medical staff and was replaced by backup QB Chase Daniel.
Bears head coach, Matt Nagy told reporters after the game that the severity of the injury is unknown. The Bears were able to hold off Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings in a 16-6 win.
Sam Darnold, QB, New York Jets.
After missing multiple games due to mononucleosis, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is not fully cleared to play week five against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Jets QB Sam Darnold still has hurdles to clear to play week five. He says he will have more tests Monday on his spleen,” tweeted NFL insider Chris Mortensen.
If Darnold is not cleared, the Jets will have to resort to backup Luke Falk. Falk suffered a 30-14 loss in his NFL debut against the Patriots but was finished with a 76.2 passer rating, completing 68.1 percent of his attempts.
Kyle Allen, QB, Carolina Panthers.
After Cam Newton suffered an apparent foot injury during week two, he was replaced by backup Kyle Allen. With the help of running back Christian Mccaffrey, Allen and the Panthers were able to hold off the Houston Texans and win 16-10. It is unclear if Newton will be able to return for the Panther’s week five game against the Jaguars, but Allen has told reporters he will prepare to play next Sunday, even if Newton is cleared to start.
