Since he posted the video on Instagram during the debate, the clip has been viewed over half a million times and been liked over 200,000 times. “Usually wouldn’t post in between seasons but was just so proud of the whole team,” Firstman wrote in the description.

In the video, the Search Party writer acts the way so many people imagine a publicist might, speaking at a mile-a-minute and hyping up his client after a huge milestone. “What the heck just happened? We’re obsessed. We’re all freaking out over here,” he says into his phone.

He also emphasized the universal appeal that the fly has, with people on both sides of the aisle finding it amusing. “Girl, America just watched you and loved you. Even the Republicans are laughing,” he quips, before telling the fly not to check Twitter.

After hyping up the fly, he pivots to talking business and constructing a narrative around the insect. “No one is talking about the fact that you are a strong, female fly-boss, girl in charge, and people need to know, and then, I think it’s acting,” he says.

When speaking of acting, even Firstman couldn’t resist a good fly pun. “People are saying you’re the next Jennifer Lawrence,” he says. “There’s Oscar buzz. Buzz? Buzz. Nadine, write that down: ‘Oscar Buzz!’ Emphasis on the ‘buzz,’ Nadine!”

Before getting off the phone, Firstman offers a few encouraging words to America’s favorite insect. “Go eat some garbage, girl. We love you, fly-boss,” he says.

Firstman’s video has resonated with plenty of people online, enough so that a bunch of celebrities have commented on it. “Damn I can’t find a fly emoji,” Katie Couric wrote on Instagram.

Actress Olivia Wilde also commented, highlighting the line about making sure Nadine emphasizes the word “buzz” with a coffin emoji. Media personality Mia Khalifa appeared impressed with the “turnaround time,” because Firstman posted the bit incredibly quickly, with the video going up at 9:45 p.m. ET, as the debate was still underway.

The newsletter Girlboss also commented, simply writing “FLYBOSS.”

Newsweek reached out to Firstman’s publicist for comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.
