The Nationals are reportedly closing in on a deal to that would bring Papelbon, 34, to the nation’s capital, according to Fox Sports. The only hitch, Papelbon will only approve the deal if he’s granted the closer role with the National League East leaders.
MLB TRADE RUMORS: Justin Upton | Padres
Drew Storen, 27, has done a fine job as the Nationals closer this season converting 29 of 31 save opportunities with a 1.73 ERA, but a pitcher with a dominant track record like Papelbon’s could serve the Nationals well later in the season with Storen in a setup role.
The main downside for Washington or any other team entertaining the thought of Papelbon — his $13-million salary and $13-million vesting option that kicks in if he records 14 more saves.
