Depp was preparing to return to court after prevailing in the $50 million defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, whom he sued after she wrote an op-ed about being a domestic abuse survivor. The jury sided largely in favor of Depp in early June.
After the ruling of the defamation trial, Gregg “Rocky” Brooks stepped forward to say he was looking forward to his own court date with Depp.
Brooks was the location manager of the 2018 crime thriller City of Lies, which is based on the investigation into the killings of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. In the film, Depp plays Russell Poole, a Los Angeles Police Department detective on the case.
According to the lawsuit in 2018, Brooks alleged that Depp got upset when he was informed that filming would have to stop one night after their city permit was repeatedly extended, Us Weekly reported.
Brooks said that the actor punched him twice in the rib cage and continued to “scream and berate [Brooks] in front of a set full of people.” Three days later, Brooks alleged that the film producer, Miriam Segal, asked him to sign a declaration stating that he would not sue the production team. Brooks said that he was fired after refusing.
While the court date for the lawsuit was set to begin on July 25, the pair reached a settlement on Monday. Because of this, Judge Holly Fujie agreed to put off the upcoming trial until January 5 of next year. The terms of the settlement have yet to be disclosed, though if Depp agrees, then Fujie will dismiss the case.
Despite the settlement, Depp fans took to social media on Monday and Tuesday and expressed their dislike for Brooks.
One fan wrote on Twitter on Monday, “so JD is gonna pay him even tho he hasnt done anything to this guy u know this is gonna turn around to make it look like JD is guilty so his paying rocky off thats how people & MSM will twist it to.”
“We dont know the terms,” another responded. “But we have all the other documents. This was always a money grab”
Another said that Brooks got scared and “pulled out” of the lawsuit. “He knows he would get exposed & destroy what’s left of his reputation & career. GB hoped for star witness AH but she got exposed as a liar & so he worked hard to reach a settlement with Johnny Depp instead,” the fan said on Twitter.
“100% total money grab,” another wrote. “It always is in the end isn’t it.”
