A clip from Oliver’s appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert was posted by Twitter user @Mara_Webster, who wrote: “John Oliver knew all along….#OprahMeghanHarry.” The clip has had over 224,000 views since it was first posted on Monday.

The post was also shared by Molly Jong-Fast, editor at large at The Daily Beast, who tweeted: “So @iamjohnoliver really called this one.” The clip shared on the editor’s feed received more than 200,000 views.

In the 2018 interview, the host of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver spoke candidly about the royal family, who he described as being an “emotionally stunted group of fundamentally flawed people.”

Asked what advice he had for Harry ahead of the wedding, Oliver (whose wife is American) told Colbert: “I would not blame her [Meghan] if she pulled out of this [the wedding] at the last minute. I don’t think you need to have just seen a pilot episode of The Crown to get a basic sense that she might be marrying into a family that could cause her some emotional complications.”

Colbert noted: “But this generation seems like nice people—they’re all nice, right?”

Oliver replied: “Yea, I mean they’re [the royal family] an emotionally stunted group of fundamentally flawed people doing a very silly pseudo job—that’s what she’s marrying into. So I hope she likes it. It’s going to be weird for her.

“I would not marry into the royal family. I’m a commoner, I would not be welcome, especially after what I’ve just said,” he added.

Meghan’s latest interview, which aired on CBS Sunday evening, also sparked a renewed interest in Princess Diana’s 1995 interview with journalist Martin Bashir for the BBC, which also went viral on social media on Monday.

The late princess’s interview for the BBC’s Panorama program drew several parallels with Oprah’s recent sit-down with Harry and Meghan. Both Diana and Meghan spoke about the breakdown of their health and their pleas for help, which were allegedly overlooked.

Meghan revealed to Oprah she had suicidal thoughts, noting: “I was ashamed to say it at the time, and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially because I know how much loss he’s suffered.

“But I knew that if I didn’t say it, then I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. That was clear and real and frightening and constant thought,” she told Oprah.

Diana told Bashir in 1995: “I had bulimia for a number of years. And that’s like a secret disease. You inflict it upon yourself because your self-esteem is at a low ebb, and you don’t think you’re worthy or valuable.

“It was a symptom of what was going on in my marriage. I was crying out for help, but giving the wrong signals, and people were using my bulimia as a coat on a hanger: they decided that was the problem—Diana was unstable,” the princess said at the time.
