The beloved Matt Groening animation is set to return to screens again with the streaming platform announcing the news on Wednesday and heralding the return of the majority of the series’ voice cast, including Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman.

Hulu tweeted a drawing of the character Bender holding a banner reading: “We’re back, baby!”

However, one key cast member is missing from this line-up—and DiMaggio is making his frustrations known on social media as fans of the cult show rally around the “irreplaceable” Bender star.

DiMaggio was absent from the revival announcement after he failed to agree to a deal with Futurama’s studio 20th Television Animation, similar to that negotiated for his fellow leads Billy West and Katey Sagal, Deadline reported.

The situation has prompted the use of the hashtag #Bendergate on Twitter.

“Thanks for the concern and the props, everyone. I really appreciate it. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted, but until then… CHEESE IT! #bendergate,” DiMaggio tweeted on Thursday.

Meanwhile, DiMaggio’s wife, Kate Miller, also tweeted in support of her husband, telling fans: “My man ⁦@TheJohnDiMaggio is irreplaceable…”

Fry voice actor Billy West has also chimed in on Twitter, responding to a fan who asked why DiMaggio hadn’t signed on, saying: “I think he’s looking for the right pen…”

DiMaggio has also let his feelings known through a series of pointed retweets from fans calling for his inclusion in the revival.

“Here’s the deal ⁦@hulu⁩, us Futurama fans have spoken. The revival MUST HAVE @TheJohnDiMaggio⁩. He is the one and only Bender. Thanks for listening. #JohnDiMaggioIsBender,” reads one.

While another reads: “Bender is @TheJohnDiMaggio. @TheJohnDiMaggio is Bender. Period.”

DiMaggio also shared a retweet from producer Jeremy Wein which reads: “this is not worth it if @TheJohnDiMaggio won’t be involved.”

Original Futurama creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen have spoken about their joy at the show being revived for Hulu.

In a statement, Cohen said: “I’m thrilled to have another chance to think about the future… or really anything other than the present.”

Groening added: “It’s a true honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama one more time before we get canceled abruptly again.”

The Futurama revival is expected to air in 2023.
