The story begins late Tuesday when the scream icon took to Twitter to share his pleasure for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the latest in the long-running Ubisoft franchise.
“ASSASSIN’S CREED VALHALLA is a return to excellence in the franchise. Massive open world, beautifully designed, with great gameplay. Incredible game,” Carpenter wrote.
What followed were messages and retweets of users shocked that the 72-year-old plays games.
“I didn’t know John Carpenter is a gamer. Cool!” wrote one user.
“John Carpenter, spending all his remake royalties checks on video games in retirement, is the goal,” wrote another.
But those in the know, KNOW that Carpenter is an avid gamer dating back to the 90s. His list of favorite games may surprise people. They aren’t exactly in keeping with what you might imagine the man who brought you Michael Myers would enjoy.
In a 2013 email interview with Giant Bomb, Carpenter spoke about his love for video games and specifically, about how his son first drew him into the world.
“My son got me interested in console video games,” Carpenter wrote. “The first game I remember playing obsessively was Sonic the Hedgehog … I have many favorite games. Borderlands 2 is spectacular. I love BioShock, the Dead Space series, The Last of Us…”
That’s an impressive list of games, but what about the horror game genre? Certainly one of the masters of horror has a liking for those games. While Carpenter does enjoy the Silent Hill series, when asked if he deconstructs the games while playing he demurred.
“I don’t think about the mechanics of horror games. I just immerse myself,” Carpenter wrote.
Perhaps Carpenter would think about the mechanics if he created a video game of his own. He did contribute to 2010’s F.E.A.R. III, and the director told Giant Bomb that he’d “love” to work on an original video game and perhaps the opportunity will present itself. Seven years later and we can only hope that day comes.
As for pitches of his own, the only constant with Carpenter is his penchant for left curves; he does, after all, feel 1986’s Big Trouble in Little China would make a great video game, so there’s that.
The director expounded up his love for video games–especially for Sonic the Hedgehog–in a 2017 interview with FactMag.
“Back in the early ’90s, I got hooked on Sonic The Hedgehog for Sega Genesis and I just couldn’t stop playing it,” Carpenter said. “I loved the game. I loved everything about it. I especially loved the music. There was something about the whole sound and feel of the Sonic games and suddenly I’m so much younger and it’s the ’90s.”
And while many of Carpenter’s 300+-thousand followers are there for his movie insights and updates on the next Halloween, the director’s tweets about the games he plays and those he’s looking forward to playing next are something to behold. Here are some of our favorites:
Maybe one day he’ll give us his opinion on Among Us.
