San Jose center Joe Thornton and St. Louis center David Backes declined to throw fists Sunday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, but they did manage to partake in a battle of the beards.

We’ve got to give the edge to Thornton here because, come on, look at that thing. Backes has to step his game up.
Backes may have lost that battle but St. Louis won the war with a 2-1 victory, after which he explained his reason for going after Thornton’s beard.
The Blues Twitter account got in a solid beard burn as well.
