“There are a lot of people that are afraid of talking about it. But they’re not afraid of voting about it. Because there’s a lot of people that are afraid of a reprisal. They’re afraid of getting attacked and they’ll silently, when they’re amongst friends, go ‘What the f*** is going on? Like, what is going on?’ And those people, that’s what’s going to be responsible for the red wave,” Rogan said on the October 31 edition of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on Spotify.

He continued, “I think the red wave that’s coming is going to be like the elevator doors opening up in The Shining. That’s what I think. I think people are just like, ‘What the f*** are you saying?’ They’re making Republicans.”

While Republican candidates did experience a fair share of victories, several key races remained too close to call Wednesday morning, and Democrats overcame GOP challenges in some large states. Currently, Republicans look to have a narrow majority of seats in the House of Representatives following the elections, while Democrats should maintain a slight advantage in the U.S. Senate.

“Joe Rogan: not too smart about politics,” sports writer Adam Proteau wrote on Twitter about the podcaster’s inaccurate prediction.

Journalist Jeff Taylor tweeted, “Wait…Joe Rogan wrong about something? I may need an IV drip and some elk meat to recover from this shock.”

“Probably a lesson to not get political advice/analysis from Joe Rogan who is a self proclaimed ‘idiot,’” Ty Jäger, producer of The Gauge podcast, tweeted.

Criticism of Rogan’s prediction was also found on Reddit. On a thread that shared a video snippet from his October 31 show, one person commented, “Shows you how out of touch Joe is. It’s not 2016 anymore.”

“I’ve been a bit disappointed in Joe the past few weeks…Hyping up a red wave and pushing the idea that the ‘woke left’ is turning people off,” another person said.

Some people said they were not surprised that Rogan’s forecast didn’t pan out.

“The idea that there was going to be a massive red wave just shows what an echo chamber Joe lives in these days. Back in reality, it’s mostly played out as expected. If Joe had the slight self-awareness, this would be a big reality check,” wrote a Reddit user.

There were some people on Reddit who were more forgiving of Rogan, though.

“He is not infallible. He thought something different than what actually happened. So what,” read one message.

Newsweek reached out to Rogan for comment.
