Quarterback Joe Flacco has been placed on injured reserve due to a herniated disc in his neck, ESPN first reported Friday. The move means Flacco’s season is over.

Flacco, 34, recently sought a second opinion regarding his neck injury. ESPN had reported Thursday that he was expected to miss four to six weeks.

Earlier this week, the team announced Flacco would miss Sunday’s game against the Browns, with backup Brandon Allen starting in his place. ESPN said Brett Rypien will be promoted from the practice squad to serve as Allen’s backujp.

Acquired from Baltimore via trade last offseason, Flacco has started eight games for Denver this season throwing for 1,822 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions while completing 65.3 percent of his passes.

The Broncos (2-6) host the Browns (2-5) at 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday.
