An internal GOP poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, an opinion research firm, was obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and showed that “the presidential race in Georgia is a dead heat.”
“Currently, 46 percent of Georgia voters are backing President Donald Trump, while 47 percent are supporting Joe Biden. Five percent of voters are undecided and 2 percent chose not to answer. The president does have an edge on intensity, with 43 percent of voters saying they will definitely vote for him, and 39 percent saying they will definitely vote for Biden,” Public Opinion Strategies stated in the poll.
The poll surveyed 500 likely voters from May 4 to 7 and has a margin of plus or minus 4.38 percent. The party identifications of those surveyed were 42 percent Republican, 41 percent Democrat, and 16 percent Independent.
The Public Opinion Strategies poll also found that 51 percent of voters approved of Governor Brian Kemp’s decision to reopen state businesses a few weeks ago, while 47 percent of voters disapproved of the decision. The poll also found that 73 percent of voters agreed with the statement that businesses had the right to reopen “so long as they follow strict health measures like wearing masks, limiting customers and practicing social distancing.” Twenty-six percent of voters disagreed with statement.
Trump was critical of Kemp’s decision at the time, saying he did not agree with the reopening of businesses like salons and tattoo parlors “too soon,” but he conceded that Kemp ultimately knew what was best for his state.
The presumptive Democratic nominee has improved in Georgia since another internal GOP poll that was released on May 1 indicated that he was one point behind Trump. That Cygnal poll showed that 45.1 percent of 591 voters would likely vote for Trump and 44 percent would vote for Biden.
The earlier poll also showed a wider range with regards to discrepancy between the two candidates as 40.8 percent of voters said they would “definitely” vote for Trump while only 34.4 percent they would definitely vote for Biden, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.03 percent.
Biden’s overall national lead over Trump declined this week, according to a Morning Consult poll released Monday. That poll revealed that Biden’s favorability dropped 5 percentage points concurrent with the sexual assault allegations brought up against him by his former staffer Tara Reade, which Biden has vehemently denied.
