Footage from Tuesday’s debate is edited to show cross-talk between the president, the moderator Chris Wallace and Biden, with Trump vocally taking issue with challenges over his response to the coronavirus pandemic.
With Wallace trying to stop Trump interrupting by insisting, “I’m the moderator of this debate,” Trump is seen at his podium with the yellow emoji over his face in which tears are streaming from his eyes.
In the background of the raucous interchange during which Biden says, “shut up, man” there is the sound of a baby crying. The 18-second video then fades to black and the message “Had enough?” appears, listing the web address to donate to Biden’s campaign.
By late Wednesday morning, the tweet, in which Biden reiterated the message “Had enough?” had been viewed more than one million times, shared more than 25,000 times, and liked more than 100,000 times. Newsweek has contacted the Trump campaign for comment.
After the debate, Biden shared tweets about the delight the far right group the Proud Boys took in being mentioned and Trump’s response for the group to “stand back and stand by,” which critics have said did not condemn their actions. Biden wrote: “This. This is Donald Trump’s America.”
On Wednesday, Biden followed it up with a tweet that said: “There’s no other way to put it: the President of the United States refused to disavow white supremacists on the debate stage last night.”
Biden’s deputy campaign manager Rufus Gifford suggested that the performance of the former vice president had boosted campaign coffers. He tweeted on Wednesday that “never before in my 16+ year political career have I received more calls/texts/emails from people wanting to give money to the campaign than I have in the last 12 hours.”
Earlier he had tweeted links to the Joe Biden store where people could purchase black T-shirts emblazoned with one of the evening’s catchphrases “Will you shut up, man?” —available in seven sizes, for $30.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Trump’s expressed what appeared to be sympathy for Wallace, who has been criticized for failing to adequately control the feisty interchanges.
“Chris had a tough night. Two on one was not surprising, but fun. Many important points made, like throwing Bernie, AOC PLUS 3, and the rest, to the wolves! Radical Left is dumping Sleepy Joe. Zero Democrat enthusiasm, WEAK Leadership!” he tweeted.
Trump followed this up with the message: “Nobody wants Sleepy Joe as a leader, including the Radical Left (which he lost last night!). He disrespected Bernie, effectively calling him a loser!” referring to Vermont senator and Democratic primary contender, Bernie Sanders.
