He was one of the late night hosts addressing the news on air for American audiences. Kimmel told a few jokes relating to Queen Elizabeth II, but also praised the monarch as “England’s rock.”

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, September 8, at the age of 96 in Balmoral, Scotland. Her death has been met with an outpouring of emotional tributes from around the globe as the U.K. prepares for 10 days of mourning.

Opening Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host started: “Actually, kind of a sad day for our friends across the pond and around the world really. Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96 today.”

Adding further context, Kimmel continued: “To put it in perspective for Americans, this would be like if Kris Jenner died, here.”

Kimmel went on to make another celebrity comparison. “The Queen is known as England’s rock and, we don’t have a rock. The closest thing we have to a ‘rock’ in America is ‘The Rock,’” he joked, referencing Dwayne Johnston.

He continued with a number of pictures of Queen Elizabeth II meeting famous people and items from across her 70-year reign, “from J.F.K, to J-L-O” and “from the Iron Lady to The Iron Throne.”

Showing a picture of Queen Elizabeth II serving in World War II Kimmel said: “She stood up to facists, and she stood behind them,” sharing a picture of the time Donald Trump walked in front of her.

Later on in the show, Simon Cowell was Kimmel’s guest. He recounted his meeting the queen 15 years ago. He stated that he was “in awe,” but she didn’t really talk to him.

British host James Corden also paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II as he opened The Late Late Show on CBS. Corden told his viewers that while he was sad, he was also “thankful and grateful to the queen for the most incredible service and leadership that she has shown during all of our lifetimes.”

Ironically, Corden’s guests on Thursday’s show were Kylie and Kris Jenner.

South African comedian Trevor Noah opened The Daily Show by discussing the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. He commented on how the reactions have ranged from “everything from ‘How will the kingdom carry on?’ all the way to ‘You shouldn’t have colonized India, bye b****.’”

Putting into context how long Elizabeth II’s reign was, he described how she’d seen the role of Batman played by Adam West, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck and Robert Pattinson.
