McElwain said even his 94-year-old mother was displeased with his profanity-filled tirade aimed at running back Kelvin Taylor on Saturday.

“I’m not proud about it, and neither is my mother,” McElwain said at his weekly news conference. “I don’t feel good about it. As you know, this is a very public job. This is a public thing that we do. I understand that I have a long ways to go and I make mistakes. …”

McElwain has come under fire for his dressing-down of Taylor, who picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for a throat-slashing motion following a touchdown in Florida’s 31-24 win over East Carolina on Saturday.

The coach didn’t apologize, but reiterated that he wishes he handled it better.

“Am I proud of it? Absolutely not,” he said. “Do I feel bad about it? Yes. At the same time, I’ve got to understand my mistakes as well and learn from it and go forward.”
