“We need to be truthful. Even if it makes others uncomfortable. Thanks for expressing support for me,” he wrote in the message.

Gaffigan sent a number of political tweets this week referencing the RNC, often criticizing President Donald Trump. Uncharacteristic of the type of observational and family-friendly humor that he’s most well known for, some Trump supporters hit back at the comedian, telling him to “stick to comedy” — an all-too-common response when a comic speaks out on issues that fans may not agree to.

“Remember everything Trump accuses the Democrats of he’s guilt of. Dont [sic] let the socialist name calling distract you from the fact he is a fascist who has no belief in law,” he wrote in one tweet.

A person responded with the “stick to comedy” response, and said that Gaffigan probably lost a bunch of followers for the comment. Gaffigan responded with: “Hey f*** you karen.” Fans reveled in the uncharacteristic tweet, including Conan sidekick Andy Richter, who said he wanted it framed.

In the description for his Instagram post thanking fans for the support, Gaffigan wrote that he stood by everything he tweeted. He also poked fun at his exchange with the critic. “I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has expressed support about my tweets. I know the bots & trolls can be scary but the truth requires direct sunlight. I regret nothing. (Well, maybe I was a little harsh to Karen.),” he wrote.

Gaffigan called on his fans to plan how they will vote, telling them that decency is in peril if the president wins a second term this November. “We need to wake up. Decency is on the ballot. It can and will get worse if Trump is re-elected. The bullying happening on both sides is wrong but Trump won’t even try to fix it. Makes sure you make a plan for how you are going to safely vote,” he wrote.

Gaffigan gained more support from his peers who commented their support for the comic on his post. Joe List, who recently released his Comedy Central special I Hate Myself, wrote: “I love you.” Mark Normand, who put out the special Out to Lunch in May, added: “You’re the man Jimbo.”

A publicist for Gaffigan did not respond to Newsweek’s emailed request for comment in time for publication.
